Review

Our Score
Although not the most obvious choice to play the man-hungry heroine in this adaptation of Judith Rossner's bestseller, Diane Keaton manages a wonderfully fraught performance in writer/director Richard Brooks's overcharged sexual melodrama. Keaton plays a teacher of deaf children who haunts singles bars at night, taking the sadistic rough (Richard Gere) with the decent smooth (William Atherton) until a bisexual killer (Tom Berenger) comes on the scene. Although reminiscent of the German classic Pandora's Box, this has a glib puritanism pervading the sleaze and, even if some aspects of the novel are glossed over, it's still very raw.

Summary

A woman leaves home after an affair with her college professor breaks down to forge a life of her own. By day she teaches deaf children, but at night she trawls singles bars, indulging in drugs and one-night stands. She promises her self to change her sordid lifestyle, but not before she brings home one last stranger. Drama, starring Diane Keaton, Richard Gere, Tuesday Weld, Richard Kiley and Tom Berenger.
