Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This cute piece of Japanese animation concerns a four-year-old boy who's peeved when his newborn sister Mirai arrives. However, he is taught to accept a redefined family dynamic by a parade of relatives past, present and future, all generated via a magic garden. It's kind of a kiddie Christmas Carol, only minus Scrooge and Christmas. Mirai isn't a Studio Ghibli film, but many will recognise the influence of SG's trademark charm and visual style. It's sweet, a little weird and very Japanese. Anime fans will love it, while a few others may find it a quietly pleasant alternative to all the sugar-rush cartooning out there.
