Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Eighteen-year-old Camille (Rachelle Vinberg) connects with a very different kind of family in this coming-of-age story set in the New York skateboard scene. Director Crystal Moselle uses a documentary style to capture the lives and loves of a group of teenage girls in and around the city, with Vinberg as the blank canvas who slowly reveals her true nature. The film eventually settles into a familiar narrative, which is a shame given the complexity of the characters, but this exploration of female adolescence still impresses with its authentic dialogue and winning performances. Future cult status seems assured.
