Our Score
Before he directed Bonnie and Clyde, Arthur Penn made this impressively cast and wondrously overcooked drama about a Texan sheriff who protects an escaped convict against a town that has run out of control. Marlon Brando has immense stature as the sheriff and clearly relishes the appalling beating he receives at the hands of the mob, while Robert Redford is perfect as the angelic convict he protects. In one sense, Lillian Hellman's script is like an updated western; in another, it evokes the madness and violence that gripped America in the aftermath of the Kennedy assassination. Although Penn virtually disowned the picture after producer Sam Spiegel had it re-edited, it remains a genuinely disturbing evocation of that traumatic era.

An escaped convict returns to his Texas home, incurring the wrath of the local sheriff and setting off a series of violent incidents. Melodrama, starring Marlon Brando, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, James Fox and Angie Dickinson.
