Our Score
A decent Civil War western with genre stalwart Randolph Scott tearing his hair out as a Union officer transporting gold from California to finance the war effort and running into Confederate sympathisers and old flame Virginia Mayo along the way. This does not break any new ground but rather re-ploughs the old furrows with consummate professionalism, pacing and style. These westerns were a dime a dozen in the early 1950s, but gradually slipped out of favour, and this is one of the last highly conventional examples to be made. Totally politically incorrect, but easy enough on the eye.

A former Union soldier is employed by a stagecoach company to guard a large gold shipment being transported across the country. Meanwhile, a loyal follower of the defeated Confederacy is plotting to steal the bullion to revive the cause, but his plans are confounded by traitorous henchmen and his wife, who was once the lover of the Union veteran. Western, with Randolph Scott, Andrew Duggan and Virginia Mayo.
