Review

Our Score
Although purporting to be a frank exploration of prostitution and lesbianism, Edward Dmytryk's adaptation of Nelson Algren's racy novel pulls its punches in virtually every scene. Too much time is spent in the company of dull Texan Laurence Harvey as he searches for his runaway lover, Capucine, and helps Anne Baxter and Jane Fonda to see the error of their ways. Far more interesting is madame Barbara Stanwyck's obsession with Capucine, but both script and direction keep the action at a gentle simmer rather than pressing on to boiling point. Saul Bass's title credits are rightly renowned as classic examples of the art.
