Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The teen angst flick meets the disaster movie in this roughly hewn but psychedelic animation from writer/director/comic-book artist Dash Shaw. Best mates Dash (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) and Assaf (Reggie Watts) survive the stresses of high school by producing a (barely read) student newspaper, until their bromance takes a turn when Assaf falls for the paper's editor (Maya Rudolph). However, their adolescent confusion and jealousy is swiftly parked when dodgy construction sends the school building hurtling into the ocean. Shaw then hurls all manner of disaster-movie features - earthquake, fire, flood, sharks, jellyfish, student cannibalism - at the trio as they try to make it up while ascending the increasingly waterlogged building, Poseidon Adventure-style. Don't expect the pristine polish of Disney and Pixar, as Shaw uses a colourful cornucopia of old-school techniques to tell his wryly imaginative story. Susan Sarandon also makes an impression as a dinner lady with attitude. Just think Ernest Borgnine in The Poseidon Adventure and you'll get the picture.
