A woman sees a killer, but not his face. She offers to pretend to be able to identify him to help the police lure him into a trap. Murder mystery, with Dan Duryea and Isa Miranda
Dan Duryea played a lot of hissable characters in his 25-year career, and director Frank Nesbitt's masterstroke here is in making it clear from the outset that his hospital orderly is behind the kidnapping of a Bristol schoolboy. The focus then turns on how Duryea attempts to deal with his neurotic wife (Gwen Watford) and cat-loving neighbour (Isa Miranda), who partially saw the killer leaving a phone box after he made the ransom call. Adapting the novel by American pulp writer Evelyn Berckman, Nesbitt adeptly blends noir and social realism, and result is flawed but fascinating. Duryea is twitchily charismatic throughout, and shares a disconcerting chemistry with the enthralling Miranda, whether helping her patch up a family feud or plotting to silence her for good.
