An orphaned brother and sister are unexpectedly transported to a magical land, and their only means of escape is to discover their bravery and sense of fun. As the title suggests, heavy product placement is at the centre of this kids' fantasy, a ploy which is made conspicuous by the lack of care taken over the plot. It is, in essence, The Lego Movie (2014) with less-memorable characters and a wandering plot. A rushed live-action segment sets us up for a slapdash animated chase, with lead Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) racing after her brattish sibling Charlie (Gabriel Bateman), colliding with a host of characters who are funny but slightly pointless. Even Rex Dasher, a James Bond pastiche voiced by Daniel Radcliffe, feels like a character that has been done before, and better. Small children will enjoy the bright colours and chaos, but Playmobil: the Movie never stops long enough to make its story memorable.
