Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Dragged Across Concrete is the sort of film that takes its time. Like director S Craig Zahler's previous movies (Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99), it hits you occasionally with a sudden burst of violence, but almost every scene is unhurried. The story unfolds slowly, following two cops (Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn) who are suspended for using excessive force during an arrest. Both men are desperate for money, so they decide to steal from bank robbers. This leads to bloodshed and shoot-outs, although action fans will need to wait. And wait. The film is long (two and a half hours), and most of the action occurs in the final 40 minutes. Still, it's a quietly engrossing experience that will reward patient viewers. The dialogue is sharp and witty, while Mel Gibson is fantastic as a cynical veteran who is "losing perspective". If you enjoy violent, slow-burn crime dramas, Dragged across Concrete is a must-see.
