Our Score
Legendary horror director John Carpenter's first big-screen outing for nine years is a suspenseful, 1960s-set thriller with gothic overtones, which pushes all the right shock buttons but suffers from a lack of originality. Amber Heard stars as Kristen, a young woman committed to a mental institution after burning down a remote farmhouse, who ends up sharing a high-security ward with four equally troubled teenage girls. When patients start to disappear, seemingly at the hands of the "ghost" of another missing inmate, Kristen plans her escape before she becomes the next victim. The film intermittently references the spookiness and style of Carpenter's classic Halloween, although its narrative invites comparison with other entries in the genre, not to be named here for fear of giving away certain plot twists. Heard makes a feisty heroine, but top marks must go to Jared Harris as the asylum's creepy chief doctor.

Summary

An amnesiac woman is committed to a psychiatric hospital after setting fire to a barn in the 1960s. She is haunted by visions of a mysterious shadowy presence and as several of her fellow patients go missing, she realises there is something supernatural haunting the institution and preying on the patients. Horror, with Amber Heard and Lyndsy Fonseca.
