Our Score
With the help of newcomer Hossein Amini's Oscar-nominated screenplay, director Iain Softley succeeds in doing Henry James justice with this visually arresting, lyrical and dark film of the author's novel. Helena Bonham Carter gives a fine performance as Kate, a modern miss who encourages her rough lover Merton (Linus Roache) to fall for dying heiress Millie Theale (Alison Elliott) in a bid to climb the social ladder. The friendship that develops between Kate and Millie and the genuine love that Millie arouses in Merton complicate the callous scheme and threaten to destroy them all.

An impoverished but calculating Edwardian Englishwoman is desperate for money and status, so she comes up with a scheme to make a fortune by marrying off her lover to a dying heiress. Romantic period drama adapted from the novel by Henry James, starring Helena Bonham Carter, Linus Roache, Michael Gambon and Elizabeth McGovern.
