Our Score
An interesting set-up sees Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst star as lovers from different worlds, trying to overcome physics and status to be together. However, in putting all their energy into the technical aspects, the film-makers leave the story stuck in the realm of the generic. The gravity-bending worlds they inhabit bring to mind similarly themed films such as Elysium, but the journey of two lovers separated by class is one that's been told a million times. No matter how much sincerity Sturgess and Dunst put into their performances, the interest wanes owing to a lack of originality and endless scenes explaining the "rules" of their universe. Had the premise been simpler, and the central romance more complex, Upside Down may have met in the middle to make an engrossing drama. As it is, too many elements collide and the film ends up being distracting and muddled.

Adam and Eden are star-cross'd lovers separated by the opposing gravitational pull of parallel worlds. Ten years after a forced separation, he sets out on a quest to be reunited with his lost love. Romantic fantasy, starring Kirsten Dunst, Jim Sturgess and Timothy Spall.
