Our Score
A milestone in the history of the glossy film musical, this Technicolor offering features a stunning Rita Hayworth and a score by Jerome Kern that includes Long Ago and Far Away. Columbia borrowed the young Gene Kelly from MGM and gave him free rein with his own sections of the movie. Kelly stepped up to the challenge, knocking out soundstage walls to create a continuous street scene for himself, Hayworth and Phil Silvers to dance through without any need for cuts. He also used trick photography to dance with himself in the "alter ego" routine. Kelly returned to MGM a master of his craft. The film is a little dated, overlong and corny, but a treat nonetheless.
