Our Score
This powerful thriller from Neil LaBute provides Samuel L Jackson with a really decent leading role. The writer/director of In the Company of Men is once more focused on the ugly side of human nature, as a black cop torments his new neighbours because of their interracial relationship. Jackson plays Abel Turner, a stressed single father and veteran LA cop who is self-appointed law in his suburban enclave. Turner's racist feathers are ruffled when Chris and Lisa Mattson (Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington) move in next door. It starts as a war of words, and rapidly escalates into something far worse. Sadly, the movie's promising build-up slips into audience-pleasing melodrama in its dying moments. Until then, LaBute almost makes amends for his ghastly remake of The Wicker Man. Almost.

A bigoted police officer appoints himself guardian of his suburban neighbourhood. When a mixed-race couple move into the house next door, his disapproval of their relationship leads him to begin a campaign of intimidation against them that spirals into violence. Neil LaBute's thriller, starring Samuel L Jackson, Patrick Wilson, Kerry Washington and Ron Glass.
