Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

It's alive! It director Andy Muschietti returns to the Stephen King territory he mined so well in 2017, providing not only a follow-up that is once more insidiously frightening but also a satisfying conclusion to the highest-grossing horror story of all time. Twenty-seven years after the Losers' Club defeated Pennywise the clown (Bill Skarsgård), the now adult friends (played by Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader among others) reunite to vanquish the monster once and for all. Clocking in at an impressive 169 minutes, It: Chapter Two is a long haul for a horror movie, yet it remains a captivating, character-driven chiller, fraught with an indefinable otherworldliness and an arresting sense of grim, grand poetry. Although the manner in which Pennywise meets his comeuppance is a little underwhelming, Muschietti's knack for layered suspense and effective scares mean this could very well be the ultimate adaptation of a Stephen King novel.
