Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The process of moving on is explored in this small-town dramedy. Rebecca Hall plays the widow of a beloved folk singer who is forced to face up to her pain when pursued by a prickly New York writer (Jason Sudeikis). The sentiment is almost as uplifting as the woodsy backdrop, as Hall and Sudeikis prod at each other's sensibilities. It's rare to find a film so eager to deal with bereavement head on, although the moments of sitcom mawkishness mean not every moment is as affecting as it should be. Nonetheless, the stars create two characters that are worth caring about - Hall's character is a feisty, bruised individual unsure what to do with the rest of her life, while Sudeikis flexes his dramatic muscles in a departure from his usual comedy roles. Tumbledown won't answer any of life's deep questions, but the feel-good glow it exudes is satisfying enough.
