Our Score
Spider-Man gets an urgent lesson in capitalist economics in this thoughtful but emotionally schematic drama set in the aftermath of the banking meltdown of 2008. Andrew Garfield stars as Dennis Nash, a single father who lives with his mother Lynn (Laura Dern) in their Florida home. Nash is struggling to get by, and when Lynn falls behind on the mortgage payments, hard-nosed property developer Rick Carver (Michael Shannon) enters their lives. A brutally insensitive and unsentimental man, Carver nevertheless gives Nash a chance - if he joins the firm, Nash will make good money and maybe even get the house back. Nash takes up Carver's offer, but soon finds that evicting and dispossessing others is a price he might not be willing to pay. As moral sagas go, it's timely and sincere, but just as the devil has all the best tunes, so the wily, reptilian Shannon often drags our attention away from the earnest and less interesting Nash.
