Our Score
Disgraced figure-skating champion Tonya Harding's hard-knock life becomes an irreverent, entertaining patchwork in director Craig Gillespie's biopic. Margot Robbie takes the lead as Harding, but it's Allison Janney who gives a Bafta-winning turn as her abusive mother - the dirt-poor driving force behind her daughter's success. Despite her technical prowess, Harding is far from the ladylike ideal desired by America's figure-skating governing body, while her association with those behind the infamous attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan brings about her downfall. It's a complex picture of a nonconformist woman, with Robbie capturing Harding's rough edges and increasing disaffection, even if she fails to find the younger Tonya's vulnerability. Meanwhile, the CGI-assisted attempts to duplicate the skater's derring-do don't always convince. It's hard to shake the feeling that this story was an easier sell as a black comedy, not least as the film withholds its sincerity for the final throes. Although ostensibly confrontational, I, Tonya seems afraid to take its subject or her suffering seriously, with scenes depicting Harding's abuse neutralised by the overarching air of freewheeling fun.
