Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This true story, less than truthfully told by director Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl) and writer Steven Rogers, presents a wilfully unreliable account of the life of Portland, Oregon, figure-skater Tonya Harding. Margot Robbie inhabits the role of the controversial ice maiden, snootily pigeonholed as "white trash", whose sporting career was derailed after she was implicated in the attack on rival US medal-hopeful Nancy Kerrigan prior to the 1994 Winter Olympics. Faked talking-head footage both bolsters and parodies the veracity of her story: locking and loading a shotgun, Robbie snarls to camera, "I never did this." Allison Janney clinched an Oscar, Golden Globe and Bafta as Harding's sadistic mother, while Paul Walter Hauser and Sebastian Stan provide unshowy support. An uproarious look at fame and misfortune, it spins in surprising directions.
