Our Score
British director Michael Winterbottom adapts the classic pulp fiction of American novelist Jim Thompson here, but something gets lost in translation. Though it's a faithful retelling of the book's events, the interior world of murderer Lou Ford is eclipsed by an excess of graphic imagery. Casey Affleck wisely underplays the intensity of Ford, the psychotic deputy sheriff of a sleepy Texan town, but Winterbottom indulges in repetitious close-ups of the appalling violence Ford visits upon the women in his life. They include a prostitute (Jessica Alba) and the archetypal girl next door, played by Kate Hudson. While there are hints of the turmoil inside this killer, those moments are too fleeting to create any tension. Winterbottom goes as far as to choose a sprightly bluegrass soundtrack to make light of Ford's lunacy. It's completely at odds with Thompson's book, where Ford doesn't view killing as the easy way out, but as a necessary evil.

A deputy sheriff in an oil-rich Texas town is secretly a sadistic and violent thug, keeping his dark side concealed behind a charming and respectable demeanour. While his girlfriend and a prostitute he is secretly having a sadomasochistic relationship with bear the brunt of his violent impulses, he also uses his position to get away with murder. Drama, starring Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba.
