Our Score
This prequel to the previous two Underworld movies explores the origins of the vampire/werewolf conflict and is the best of the saga. Patrick Tatopoulos - the designer of the creatures in the series - makes his directorial debut here and enhances the gloomy, gothic look of the franchise with fantasy flair and captivating fairy-tale atmosphere. In a nod to Spartacus, enslaved Lycan Lucian (Michael Sheen at his buff and charismatic best) incites his wolf/man species to rebel. The Romeo and Juliet scenario remains centre stage too, as Lucian's secret lover is Sonja (Rhona Mitra, replacing Kate Beckinsale as the leading lady vampire), the daughter of chief bloodsucker Viktor (Bill Nighy). The New Zealand locations are used well by Tatopoulos, who supplies plenty of fast-moving action and inventive carnage. Indeed, the final battle even gives The Lord of the Rings a run for its money in epic quality.

Bold and charismatic werewolf slave Lucian incites his species to rebel against the vampires who enslaved them. Together with his secret lover - the daughter of vampire king Viktor - Lucian raises an army worthy of taking on their bloodsucking oppressors, beginning a centuries-long conflict. Fantasy horror prequel, starring Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy and Rhona Mitra.
