Our Score
This luscious, glorious Technicolor entry in Universal's memorable Ross Hunter/Douglas Sirk cycle of no-holds-barred melodramas is the one that turned beefcake Rock Hudson into a romantic superstar. Adapted from the syrupy novel by Lloyd C Douglas, it was a box-office hit the first time around (in 1935) with Irene Dunne and Robert Taylor. This time an Oscar-nominated Jane Wyman plays the woman who loses her husband and goes blind, partly through Hudson's irresponsibility. While she is cared for by Agnes Moorehead, he mends his ways and becomes a brilliant surgeon before seeking her out years later. All this makes for irresistible drama.

A wealthy playboy blames himself for the death of the doctor who saved his own life in a boating accident, and when he later falls in love with the medic's widow and a second accident causes her to go blind, he trains as a surgeon in the hope of restoring her sight. Melodrama, starring Rock Hudson, Jane Wyman, Agnes Moorehead and Otto Kruger.
