David Niven portrayed himself as a buffoon in his autobiography
The Moon's a Balloon
. In fact, he was a fine actor, at his best when playing life-cashiered failures, as in
for which he won an Oscar, and in this otherwise tedious effort, as the tutor to a Japanese child who finds he has to live up to the Walter Mitty-ish fantasies with which he's entertained the boy when both are kidnapped by terrorists. His performance as a man trying to make up for a loser's lifetime is at once noble and sad, but it lifts this rather leaden idea to heights to which it might never have aspired.
An English tutor enthralls a Japanese ambassador's son with improbable fantasies of his heroic exploits, but then finds himself forced to act them out for real when he and the boy are both kidnapped. Comedy adventure, starring David Niven, Toshiro Mifune, Hardy Kruger and Ivan Desny.
