From the moment Aubrey Plaza gatecrashes a wedding and maces the bride, it's clear Matt Spicer's comedy will err on the darker side of funny. His razor-sharp, tragicomic update of Single White Female strikes a fine balance between humour and horror as Plaza's social-media-obsessed stalker targets Elizabeth Olsen's oh-so-hip Instaglamazon, moving into her neighbourhood and splashing out on new clothes, new hair and a new pad in her quest to become more and more like her girl crush. Peppering his visuals with emojis and skewering lifestyle porn to gigglesome effect, Spicer occasionally struggles to maintain the film's flip vibe, particularly in a subplot involving Olsen's meddling brother (Billy Magnussen), but Plaza provides a dependably deranged anchor as a sympathetic, scarily relatable monster. In her hilarious "emoji-speak", Olsen's character might describe Ingrid Goes West as "hashtag funny-sad". And she'd be right.
