Lord of the Flies
in this fast-paced and enjoyably moody teen thriller adapted from the first of James Dashner's bestselling novel series. In a star-making role, Dylan O'Brien plays Thomas, the latest in a line of boys to be dumped in a clearing at the centre of a giant maze while suffering from a bad case of amnesia. A power struggle then ensues when our hero announces his intention to run the maze and find a way out. Will Poulter is impressive as the naysayer, driven by fear and suspicion, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster is a convincing sage despite his youth. The truths they uncover on the final leg of the journey could have been handled better by director Wes Ball, but his film has enough twists and turns to ensure you stick around for later instalments.
Summary
A boy arrives in an isolated community of children, with no memory of who he is or the outside world. When another new arrival brings an ominous message, he realises time is running out for the group and they must find an escape route through a deadly labyrinth if they are to survive. Sci-fi adventure based on James Dashner's novel, starring Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario and Patricia Clarkson.
