Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Film-maker Andrew Kötting and author Iain Sinclair amused and provoked with their previous peregrination in By Our Selves (2015), and here embark upon another psychogeographical odyssey with this delightfully unpredictable but deceptively acute travelogue. Filmed on digital Super 8 iPhones, it follows the intrepid duo and a band of troubadours on a pilgrimage from the tomb of King Harold in Waltham Abbey in Essex to a statue of the slain Anglo-Saxon monarch cradled by his wife, Edith the Fair (aka Edith Swan-Neck), in St Leonards-on-Sea in East Sussex. During the 108-mile progress, Kötting, Sinclair and travelling companions like writer Alan Moore and artist Anonymous Bosch provide much to ponder on notions of Englishness and the living legacy of history. But the most compelling presence is musician Claudia Barton, who swans about in a white wedding dress while singing lyrics that comment incisively on love, loyalty and the way women have been treated in the 950 years since the Battle of Hastings. Scattershot, but quixotic and intriguing.
