Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Tupac Shakur's road to fame is explored in this biopic, made 20 years after the rapper's death. His family, relationships and industry beefs pave the road to his murder at the age of just 25. Clumsy narration (in the form of a filmed interview) spoon-feeds the events of his life, leaving no room for subtlety. Shakur's every thought is spelled out in a story that is frustratingly short on any revelations. Demetrius Shipp Jr is startling as Shakur, not only perfecting the look but the mannerisms of the late star in a way that gives the film authenticity. The rest of the cast is hit and miss, although his on-screen relationship with Kat Graham's Jada Pinkett puts a little heart in between the posturing. More a list of bullet points than a life story, All Eyez on Me has its moments but fails to do its subject justice.
