This far-from-baffling murder mystery may not be premier league stuff, but it has become something of a cult item in art house circles. There's plenty to enjoy as maverick Scotland Yard inspector Leslie Banks tries to find out who murdered star player Anthony Bushell during a friendly match, not least the chance to see members of the 1937/38 Arsenal championship-winning side in action. Working from Leonard Gribble's novel, director Thorold Dickinson reveals a talent for authentic detail; there's also a pleasing lightness about the action, which stands in stark contrast to his later films such as Gaslight and The Queen of Spades.

An amateur football team take on Arsenal for a charity event, only for their star player to drop dead during the game. A dedicated Scotland Yard inspector steps in to investigate and becomes convinced the player was murdered - but how remains a mystery. British thriller, starring Leslie Banks, Greta Gynt, Ian Maclean and Esmond Knight.
