When middle-weight boxer Matty Burton suffers a serious head injury, the impact on his family life is earth-shattering.
Award-winning actor Paddy Considine follows up Tyrannosaur, his extraordinarily powerful feature debut, with another stark and emotionally draining drama. Merging gut-wrenching social realism with moving moments of deeply felt humanity, Journeyman follows champion boxer Matty Burton (Considine), who suffers a catastrophic head injury during a retirement title fight. His wife Emma (Jodie Whittaker) starts rebuilding their shattered lives, but Matty's condition makes him prone to erratic and violent eruptions, and so Emma is forced to make a heartbreaking choice; protect herself and their baby daughter, or stay to help the man she loves. Confidently and skilfully directed by Considine, Journeyman is further buoyed by a superb ensemble cast, who make this "triumph over adversity" tale a harrowing study in both conflict and the power of redemptive friendship. But it's the two remarkable main leads who shine, punching over the profound intensity of their downward-spiralling situation with such believability and compassion it brings tears to the eyes.
