Our Score
Don DeLillo's novel dissecting the American Dream comes to the screen in a dull, verbose and highbrow intellectual exercise, too faithfully adapted by director David Cronenberg. Expressionless Robert Pattinson is the financial whizzkid Eric Packer, who must watch his empire crumble over the course of one day in Manhattan, and finds momentary distraction in sexual encounters with three women. Most of the stagey drama happens in the back of a cruising limousine, with every interaction highlighting a nugget of truth about today's computer society. It's a good-looking movie, but the immersion in the psychosis of cyber-capitalism soon becomes boring. There are shades of Cronenberg's past movies eXistenZ and Videodrome, and the Crash-like ambience is obvious. But even the sterling supporting cast of Juliette Binoche, Mathieu Amalric and Paul Giamatti can't lift this static odyssey.

A billionaire driven across Manhattan in a limousine discovers that an unexpected development in the stock market is poised to destroy his financial empire. As his fortune crumbles before his eyes, the real world starts to infringe on his sheltered existence through a series of strange encounters. David Cronenberg's drama, starring Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche and Paul Giamatti.
