In this whimsical romantic comedy, John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale play the Christmas shoppers who meet in a New York department store and realise they are strongly attracted to one another. Both are involved with other people, so, on her insistence, they leave the chance that they could make a cute twosome to the fickle hand of fate. Years later, when they're about to go down the aisle with their respective partners, they try to find each other to see if it really was true love. Director Peter Chelsom's follow-up to the disastrous
Town and Country
is occasionally sickly sweet, but is saved from being just another dollop of seasonal whimsy by Cusack's winning performance. There's also fun support from Jeremy Piven as the cynical best friend and Eugene Levy as an uptight shop assistant.
Summary
Two New Yorkers fall for each other - but rather than give their current partners the elbow to start a relationship, they decide to hedge their bets and leave the outcome to fate. Five years down the line, the couple, who thought they had resigned themselves to being apart, realise only days before their weddings that they were meant to be together. Romantic drama, starring Kate Beckinsale, John Cusack, Molly Shannon and Jeremy Piven.
