Our Score
A ground-breaking horror/black comedy that reintroduced writer HP Lovecraft to a new generation, and set a new level as to how far on-screen outrageousness could go. It also introduced cult star Jeffrey Combs, excellent as the funny and scary borderline-mad Herbert West, a young medical student working on a formula that brings the dead back to life. However, the dead don't come back in either tip-top or co-operative shape, leading to a number of wildly escalating problems ... First-time director Stuart Gordon never lets up from the start, constantly pushing the limits with the gory antics, but also showing an absurd side to such sequences. Supporting players Barbara Crampton and David Gale (involved in a now-legendary scene near the end) give performances with a wink, as it should be.

A medical student and his girlfriend are drawn into a series of bizarre experiments by his creepy new roommate, who has found a way to bring the dead back to life. However, his efforts lead to all manner of gory consequences for the unwitting heroes. Horror based on HP Lovecraft's short story, starring Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott, Barbara Crampton and David Gale.
