Our Score
Most horror franchises run out of steam after the first sequel but - perhaps because George A Romero isn't exactly prolific - the Dead series has retained a high-quality threshold. In this fourth instalment, Romero shows why he remains the reigning king of the zombie flick by once again balancing crowd-pleasing gore with some neat satirical jibes at modern-day America. With the planet now overrun by the undead, the living also have to deal with the new social hierarchy created by unscrupulous tycoon Dennis Hopper. So, while the wealthy enjoy the high-rise luxuries of Fiddler's Green, the majority are confined to the slums. To make matters worse, it seems that at least one of the zombies is starting to think for himself, setting the scene for an epic confrontation. Romero is unlikely ever to top the mordant wit of Day of the Dead, but this entry boasts his most notable cast yet (The Mentalist's Simon Baker, John Leguizamo, Asia Argento) and is a worthy addition to the series.

The world is overrun by zombies, forcing the few human survivors to hide out in a high-walled island metropolis. However, as their leader loses control of the city, the army of undead begins to develop intelligence and break through the barricades, leading to carnage and mayhem. George A Romero's fourth instalment in the horror series, starring Dennis Hopper, John Leguizamo and Simon Baker.
