Our Score
The disaster movie formula hasn't changed much over the years - plenty of big names and lots of nail-biting incident. Unfortunately, Lewis Gilbert fails to generate much excitement with this stiff wartime tale of pluck and endurance, about a plane-load of heroes pitching into the briny. The calamities are utterly predictable, while, unlike Hitchcock's Lifeboat or Richard Sale's Abandon Ship!, there is no palpable tension between the castaways (clichés to a man). Each member of the stellar cast, including Michael Redgrave and Dirk Bogarde, is seemingly more preoccupied with holding his own in such august company than contributing to the ensemble effort.
