Our Score
This tongue-in-cheek espionage affair stars Bruce Willis as a former CIA operative whose status is "RED" - Retired and Extremely Dangerous - meaning his knowledge of previous covert activities makes him a security risk. Having found a potential soulmate in Mary-Louise Parker, his call-centre contact at the pensions department, Willis is looking forward to the next chapter in his life - until that future is interrupted by gun-toting assailants. Time then to assemble the old gang as Robert Schwentke's film plays its strongest card, a stellar cast: Morgan Freeman (stuck in an old folks' home), John Malkovich (a loopy survivalist), Helen Mirren (now doing occasional assassinations for fun) and Brian Cox (still working for Russian intelligence). As they reunite to fend off the two-dimensional baddies all seems set for a jaunty spy caper, whereupon the movie simply runs out of inspiration, threading together perfunctory shoot-outs, middling wisecracks and predictable twists. There's the occasional twinkle from distinguished performers obviously not taking it too seriously, but this is by and large a waste of their talents.
