Uncertain is a visually stunning and disarmingly funny portrait of the literal and figurative troubled waters of Uncertain, Texas, a 94-resident town so tucked away "you've got to be lost to find it".
The town of Uncertain could be the dictionary definition of "backwater", located as it is on the Texas-Louisiana border and home to just 94 residents. But, as debuting documentary-makers Ewan McNicol and Anna Sandilands discover, there's plenty going on if you know where to look. Seventy-something African-American Henry Lewis and recovering addict Wayne Smith have both done time, and epitomise Sheriff Tom McCool's contention that Uncertain is a fine place to lay low from the law. But the recently widowed Henry is now more concerned with the plague of Salvinia ferns jeopardising his livelihood as a fishing guide on Caddo Lake, and Wayne is fixated on hunting a hulking wild hog nicknamed "Mr Ed" to atone for causing a fatality while driving under the influence. Only 21-year-old Zach Warren has a mind to move on. But finding work in Austin proves tricky for a diabetic heavy drinker and the directors follow his hapless progress with an acuity and compassion that informs every frame of this handsome and heartfelt study of the America neglected by the cosmopolitan elite.
