Our Score
Tom Cruise's long-held ambition to discover his Irish ancestry led to this curious, frothy 19th-century period piece, in which he somewhat unbelievably earns his living as a bare knuckle fighter. Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman, his co-star and real-life wife at the time, flounces around, tossing acres of pre-Raphaelite curls. Directed with predictable gloss and visual panache by Ron Howard, and with a soundtrack featuring the stirring strains of Irish singer Enya, this is a movie that bounces along pleasingly enough on a sea of ripped petticoats, horse whips and rotten teeth, yet has the depth of one of Cruise's mock punches. All is vapid, pretty, stereotypical and rather lame.

Penniless Irish farmer Joseph seeks revenge on the cruel landowner who drove him from his home. However, the landlord's daughter, desperate to escape her family, persuades him to join her in seeking their fortune in America. The pair plan to stake a claim in the Oklahoma gold rush, but instead Joseph is forced to become a bare-knuckle fighter to support them. Romantic drama set in the 1890s, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
