Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

There's daft. There's dafter. And then there's The Void, a thoroughly bonkers schlock-fest awash with nods to John Carpenter (Assault on Precinct 13, The Thing, Prince of Darkness), Hellraiser and even Michael Mann cult chiller The Keep. Set against the backdrop of a hospital under siege, this pot-pourri of horror tropes manages to incorporate everything from cultists and mad doctors to misshapen human experiments and tentacled thingies that look like they've slithered straight out of the pages of an HP Lovecraft book. And that's not to mention some pretentious pan-dimensional triangle stuff. Lovingly and lingeringly lurid, there are extensive gory bits, some needlessly filmed with irritating strobe-light accompaniment. It's all fairly slickly, some may say sickly, made. And there's definitely some guilty pleasure to be derived from watching it. Realistically, though, this is for hardcore horror fans.
