Our Score
Director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) took the reins of the Marvel Comics franchise for this highly enjoyable episode. War looms when a cure for mutants is invented, threatening the future of their kind. The faction led by Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) stands for choice, while Magneto (Ian McKellen) believes in the survival of the fittest. But Magneto gains a powerful ally in the form of the resurrected Dr Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), whose transformation into Dark Phoenix has given her world-consuming powers. Major characters die in the mayhem that follows, but it's slightly hard to care when emotional connection is sacrificed at the expense of action. The script suffers from a bewildering mass of interpersonal storylines, too many characters (some given the shortest of shrifts), and lots of heavy exposition uttered in purple prose. But Ratner's technically proficient blockbuster is spectacular to a fault, with the best thrill being Magneto manipulating San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge to become a highway to Alcatraz.

The mutant heroes return to face a battle on three fronts. Arch-enemy Magneto is back with an army of followers, while a corporation has created a drug that permanently robs mutants of their powers. Meanwhile, their former ally Jean Grey has returned from the dead as the destructive and seemingly unstoppable Phoenix. Third instalment of the superhero saga, starring Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, Halle Berry and Kelsey Grammer.
