Our Score
The star and director of 2011 neon noir thriller Drive reunite for a bizarre, bloodthirsty drama that will upset, bore, or at the very least alienate the vast majority of Ryan Gosling's teen fanbase. At times agonisingly slow and punctuated with graphic scenes of extreme violence, this fractured, psychedelic film by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (for whom violence is an enduring fascination) will only reward those brave enough to stay with it. Gosling plays Julian, who runs a drug-dealing operation using the cover of his boxing club in Bangkok. When his psychotic brother is murdered, he comes under pressure from their domineering mum (Kristin Scott Thomas) to kill the man responsible. It sounds like a standard pulp gangster flick, but Only God Forgives is nothing of the sort. Refn focuses on Julian's torment as he hides a terrible secret and unwittingly summons up a supernatural angel of vengeance in the form of a blade-wielding detective (Vithaya Pansringarm) who stalks him through the city streets. The result is an artful vision of hell.

Two brothers run a drug-smuggling operation out of a boxing gym in Thailand, only for one of them to be killed in retribution for the death of a prostitute. The pair's ruthless mother orders her surviving son to avenge his death, forcing him into a conflict with a cop who uses brutal methods to enforce the law. Crime thriller, starring Ryan Gosling and Kristin Scott Thomas.
