Our Score
W Somerset Maugham's story about a drunken derelict who's reformed by a prissy missionary had been filmed under its original title, Vessel of Wrath, in 1938 with Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester in the leads. Robert Newton had also appeared in the 1938 version and seems so aware of the stature of Laughton's performance that he allows his own to lapse into a slurred variation on Long John Silver, whom he had played four years earlier. Newton's blustering blows poor Glynis Johns and the rest of a decent cast off the screen. Only a faithful elephant emerges with much credit.
