Review

Our Score
Time has not been terribly kind to this adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's First World War love story about an English nurse and an American ambulance driver. But, in 1932, Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper (accompanied by Wagner on the soundtrack) created tidal waves of tears in movie theatres. Still worth seeing for those classically romantic performances and for the Oscar-winning photography by Charles Lang. There was a 1957 remake with Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones, and Richard Attenborough's 1996 film In Love and War, starring Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell deals with the real-life story behind Hemingway's novel.
