Catfight is an unusual pitch-black comedy, not least because it features three extended fight sequences between a pair of middle-aged women. Anne Heche plays Ashley, a struggling artist who is unable to make a living from her work. Sandra Oh plays Veronica, a boozy trophy wife who is enjoying a life of privilege. Once upon a time Ashley and Veronica were friends in college, but something happened between them, and they come to blows after a chance encounter at a party. The story then jumps forward two years, at which point the characters' fortunes are reversed. All of this is strangely enjoyable, and it benefits from note-perfect performances from the two leads, both of whom are impressively committed to the brutal fight sequences. Director Onur Tukel's feisty film won't be for everyone, but it's worth a look if you like your satirical comedies to combine scathing dialogue with contemptible characters.
