Rating: 3 out of 5.

Although this Anglo-French slow-burner is no remake of the similarly titled 1981 Aussie thriller starring Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis, it does have one thing in common, namely a serial killer on the prowl for hitchhiker prey. Here, the maniac menaces the rural byways of France, where lovelorn Englishman Jack (Andrew Simpson) and French hiker Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume) meet and keep each other company, until they are persuaded to stop off at the mansion of a weird, slightly creepy couple (played by Frédéric Pierrot and American fright queen Barbara Crampton). Like cult 70s whodunnit And Soon the Darkness (that also used verdant Gallic countryside as an atmospheric backdrop for a murder mystery), the identity of the homicidal fiend slicing up passers-by is always up for grabs. Even when revelations, torturous confrontations and frantic chases crash the narrative, nothing is quite as it seems. Beautifully shot and paced, it's an understated but suspenseful slice of intrigue.
