Our Score
This dystopian sci-fi movie stars Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult as two people who fall in love, breaking the laws of a society that treats emotion as a disease. Despite a premise that many films have used before, the story creates an interesting world, full of clean white lines and a social structure that becomes a villain in itself. Against this backdrop, Hoult's first flickers of emotion are given added tension as he enters an intense relationship with fellow 'sufferer' Kristen Stewart. Unfortunately, the film's depiction of their journey is a little bit predictable. As fascinating as it is to examine the idea and importance of love, there's always a sense of knowing what's in store for the pair. Despite its flaws, a strong cast (including an underused Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver) makes Equals a polished futuristic drama that looks at universal themes from a rewarding, if not entirely unique, viewpoint.

In a dystopian future, all emotion is ruthlessly suppressed, with those who exhibit feelings being taken away for medical treatment. Two co-workers begin to fall in love, and must find a way to be together as medical science moves closer to eradicating emotion altogether. Sci-fi romance, starring Kristen Stewart, Nicholas Hoult and Guy Pearce.
