Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Hiding the death of their mother in order to continue living together in sprawling rural harmony, a family of four young siblings are plagued by eerie phenomena in this risible directorial debut from the screenwriter of The Orphanage and The Impossible, Sergio G Sánchez. Set in 1969, the soft-horror's convoluted plotting includes a love triangle, social shame, potential blackmail, guilty secrets and an outlandish third-act twist that causes the house to buckle under the weight of too much forced suspense. Sadly, Sánchez does not have the proper experience to funnel his haphazard horrors - be they real, over-actively imagined or ghostly - towards that narrative game-changer to achieve heartfelt emotion or marrow chills. Coming across as way too arch, despite some good work by actors George MacKay, Charlie Heaton and Anya Taylor-Joy, this is cracked-mirror melodrama that renders each and every dark mood swing ineffective.
