Our Score
Set in partitioned Berlin at the height of the Cold War, this is a less than convincing return to Third Man territory by Carol Reed. Using some of the most outrageously oblique camera angles of his career to suggest a city out of kilter and its citizens beset by fear and doubt, Reed strains for a visual edginess that might atone for (or even distract from) the flatness of this melodramatic and, frankly, suspenseless tale. Recognising that their characters have no depth, the members of the cast fail to rouse themselves, although James Mason is as watchable as ever.
