There's been a constant stream of serial-killer procedurals since David Fincher's landmark shocker Se7en in 1995, some of them good (Fincher's own Zodiac, Kiss the Girls), others not so good (Alex Cross, The Snowman). Unfortunately, writer/director David Raymond's debut veers towards the latter, despite an initially intriguing premise that sees an obsessive cop's hunt for a vicious killer collide with a vigilante's mission to capture and punish sex offenders. Ex-Superman Henry Cavill leads the chase as dour detective Marshall but is so morose in his pursuit of a common enemy, he makes Clint Eastwood look positively jocular in comparison. However, Ben Kingsley provides gravitas and even a few chills as the vigilante, particularly when he's meting out his own excruciating brand of justice. Trouble is, there are too many leaps of faith to sustain the seeds of a good idea, and with so many attention-grabbing small-screen offerings around (like The Alienist and Mindhunter on Netflix), the ante for delivering the thriller-killer goods has been well and truly upped.
