Our Score
Pierce Brosnan hightails it across mountains, rivers and desert pursued by a vengeful Liam Neeson in this mean and moody western. It's 1868, and although the Civil War has been over for three years these veterans from opposing sides of the conflict still have a personal score to settle. Director and co-writer David Von Ancken doesn't reveal their history until very late in the film, focusing instead on the primal struggle of man against man. A fascinating battle of wills is enhanced by imposing landscapes - the environment proving just as unforgiving as the two leads. The opening half hour runs on pure adrenaline, with only snatches of dialogue between breaths. Midway, however, the chase does become a little wearying because Von Ancken keeps his characters emotionally remote. Then a late and spooky cameo appearance by Anjelica Huston marks an enigmatic change of direction. It's not a convincing outcome, but the power of the film lies in the copious blood, sweat and tears shed along the way.

A veteran Union soldier hiding out in the Ruby Mountains at the end of the American Civil War is relentlessly pursued by a vengeful Confederate officer. Hindered by a gunshot wound, the fugitive flees across the wilderness as his enemy maintains his tense and bloody game of cat-and-mouse - but the reasons for his hatred remain a mystery. Western thriller, with Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson and Anjelica Huston.
