Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Young star Pio Amato is wonderful in this drama about a teenager from a Romani family in a small Italian community, who's looking to prove himself on the streets in his big brother's absence. Filmed in documentary style, this snapshot of a lesser-known corner of the world is a fascinating watch. The blending of communities (or lack thereof), and the dynamic of Pio's large family creates a universe in which our charming lead can swim around. While the setting may be unique, the story of his fight to establish his reputation is intriguing and familiar, even if the plot meanders at times. This leisurely pace also allows Pio's relationships with his mother and mentor of sorts Ayiva (Koudous Seihon) to develop in an interesting fashion. Director Jonas Carpignano's observational style and a cast of amateur actors ensure The Ciambra is an authentic-looking journey into a life of crime.
